National Poetry Month

National Poetry Month

In 1996 the American Academy of Poets designated April as National Poetry Month. Since then, events that celebrate and promote poetry have been held nationally. This year, the English Department at Minnesota State University, Mankato joins with an event of its own: our first annual National Poetry Month Video Project.

Our project consist of thirty short videos, professionally filmed, produced, and edited by Maverick Visual Productions, Minnesota State University’s in-house studio. In each, an undergraduate reads a poem by an established poet. Our selection showcases work by poets like Dickinson, Frost, and Shakespeare, as well as contemporary poets including the Poet Laureate for the State of Minnesota, a National Book Award Finalist, a Minnesota Book Award winner, a New York Times best-selling author, and two Guggenheim fellows. Five poets are English Department alumni.

We'll release one video each day of April. We hope to increase the appreciation of poetry and to shine a light on our students’ talent and good work. We also hope that you enjoy watching these videos as much as we enjoyed making them.

Best,
Professor Matthew Sewell, Department Chair
